Though the people inside were his kin in affliction, they were not his kin in conviction.
For James, GCSE Health and Social is about 60% procrastination, 30% dramatics and 10% of Sirius swearing his way into detention. It most certainly does not include being handed a plastic baby and being expected to take care of it with the girl of his dreams.
It takes more than two weeks to come to the final diagnosis, which James was pretty sure of the minute he woke up.
Concussion. No screens. No school.
No hockey.
He doesn’t return to Madison at all that year, going home with his parents and settling into his room, blankets hung over the windows, and allowing the darkness to consume him.
