A collection of short-form fiction (mostly drabbles) written in an attempt to claw my way back from a 3+ year writing slump
"Half the time, he’s not sure if he’s trying to escape his gloomy past or his equally grim-looking future, and it leaves him stuck running in place in a dismal present, going nowhere but leaving nothing behind, fighting a senseless war. With every passing day, every loss and vigil, every minute of silence for a fallen comrade, a hero, a martyr, he finds it more and more difficult not to contemplate the futility of it all, to delude himself into thinking he’s fighting for any other reason than because he must; not to fight would mean to simply not exist, to lose all connections he’s ever forged."
Remus comes home after another mission, reflects on the futility of war, and has to come to terms with some unpleasant news.
"Soft-and-rough hands meet rough-and-soft. Her palms are calloused, thick ridges stretching across her palm and each of her fingers, but the back of her hand is soft and smooth. The fingers entwined in hers – shiny black nail polish intersecting with chipped lilac varnish – are warm and unblemished, but the skin on your knuckles is cracked, tiny scratches criss-crossing each other, layered like shadows on a charcoal sketch, brought about by the cold and forgetfulness."
A collection of unrelated drabbles, most of which are written for forum events!

You don’t mean to sound ungrateful, because you’re not, and you know that, in the grand scheme of things, you’ve been incredibly lucky, but – Well, there’s always a ‘but’, isn’t there? Turns out, in your everyday life, the grand scheme of things accounts for bugger all.

But she also grows up in times of war, and not even her brothers can protect her from it.
"If she wants to be alone, Lily won’t have gone to any of their usual haunts, or anywhere busy, which quickly rules out all of their friends’ homes, his parents’ old house, or even Hogsmeade. James knows that if Lily doesn’t want to be found, it will almost certainly be impossible for him to detect her. He can only hope others are similarly unsuccessful. "
James and Lily have just been told that their little boy may be destined to end the war his parents have been fighting in for years. Neither of them takes it well.

James didn’t know what he was to expect; you never could tell with Remus. Sirius was easy, you only needed to let him scream himself hoarse and be there when the walls inevitably came crashing down. Peter, too, was a piece of cake, probably the only one to ever willingly admit he was struggling. All you had to do was listen, offer a few words of advice and a prank to cheer him up again. Easy. James knew how to do those things, had done them more often than he cared to count. Remus, however, was a different story, less prone to weaving the same patterns again and again.
After a disastrous lesson, James tries to get through to his friend.
Lavender had expected many things from her summer spent at Parvati’s grandparents’. She had expected late-night heart-to-hearts over cups of hot, wonderfully sweet chai with her best friend. She had expected laughter, and dancing, and lots of noise. She hadn’t expected to fall in love
