What a great first line, to be honest. Just carry the squiggle.
I love how Malfoy is the same old sassy pants. the comment about Rose's boyfriend got me good.
After reading WS and the whole "when Rose is comfortable around people she stands up to them" thing, I LOVE this. She's being sassy right back to Scorpius and I'm here for it. I love the two of them. They have such a great dynamic.
I love how Al is showing his easy brilliance even in 5th year. He's a marvel. Even if he does apply it to less noble causes than he perhaps should. Al clearly knows something is up between these two right from school. Did he want Rose to live with them to get them together? We already know money wasn't an actual issue, and that it was PARTLY because he wanted to be able to spend more time with her... oooh sneaky Al.
Oh how CUTE is that ending! The two Scorpius got unexpected Os in were the two Rose was trying to show Al, right? And Scorpius took in everything she was saying. My heart. This is how you break me.
Okay, SO I keep hearing amazing things about Witch Slap and I have it on my list of things to read, so I thought I'd stop by and read this piece real quick to get a taste of that world.
AND I LOVE IT.
Your writing is so clever! I love your characterizations of these three. Even in a short piece, I can get a sense of their personalities and that just shows how good of a writer you are. There's Rose, who is so dedicated and focused and clearly likes to take the lead. Then there's Albus, who is basically me in school--I took for granted my intelligence and was really, really bad at studying, which came back to bite me in the butt once I got to like AP Calc and other such RIDICULOUS classes. And Scorpius, there to be sarcastic and slightly stand-offish and enjoy all the bickering with that GRIN of his. :P
There are so many hints at Scorpius and Rose being interested in each other, though it's clear neither of them are ready to admit it, and I am just giggling over here. SO CUTE. Their bickering gives me life.
I don't know what a squiggle is but I'm obsessed. I love how it's carried through to the end in this comical, nostalgic way. Like--it brings things full circle but it also shows that Scorpius was paying close attention to what Rose was saying which is SO CUTE and it reveals, again, how oblivious and lost-in-his-own-world Albus is. Wow. I just really love these characters. I hope that I find time to really dig in to Witch Slap very soon!

Okay, do you remember when I was saying I love your attention to magical details and worldbuilding and all of your apparently effortlessly clever ideas?
CARRY THE SQUIGGLE.
WHO EVEN COMES UP WITH THIS?
It’s SO good.
It’s like… it’s so brilliantly inane -- like first of all, what even is arithmancy? Hell if I know. I mean, it’s like numerology, I guess, but I don’t know any further than than, particularly however it’s treated in the wizarding world. But the whole idea of carrying the squiggle is such good satire of whatever kind of mysticism is involved in this school subject. AND at the same time it’s really a very relatable real-world situation -- you have people who aren’t good at maths, just really don’t get it, and you have someone else who is good at maths and trying to explain it like, “Just carry the 3, it’s not that hard!” But for the person who isn’t good at maths, you may as well be saying “Carry the squiggle” for all the sense it makes to them.
Anyway, loved seeing this glimpse of these dummies as babies (almost babies), so familiar in their characterizations and idiocy but noticeably younger in terms of their maturity and focus. And the ending! So cute!! Brings up so many questions about why Scorp is always in the study room with them. Because we know from WS that Scorp is nowhere near admitting that to himself yet.

I AM BACK, because apparently I can’t get enough of these two.
Truly, I would love to know what “carry the squiggle” means because that phrase is just so utterly delightful! I look at it and grin ridiculously! I’d imagine it’s something like “carry the one” in real-life mathematics, since they’re talking about Arithmancy, BUT WHAT IS THE SQUIGGLE. It’s amazing to think that wizarding mathematics works in such a way that it bends the mundane mind. I was never very good at math. :P
THE SCORPIUS/ROSE TIDBITS IN THIS CHAPTER MAKE ME WANT TO SING. They’ve liked each other for so long! And they just didn’t know it! It makes me want to dance around the house merrily. It absolutely tickles me that Scorpius, by sitting in the same classroom as Albus and Rose and doing nothing but needling the poor girl, managed to absorb enough information to pass his exams with flying colors. I feel like it really says a lot about how amazing and fantastic and wonderful Rose was, for putting up with the two of them without spontaneously combusting, AND managing to get them (or at least Scorpius) to a really good level. :P I love what she said about Albus and work ethic, it’s so amusing seeing that after coming from the most recent chapter where he took 2+ hours to get out of bed hahaha.
“with a lopsided smirk that made her insides curl” EXCUSE ME, ROSE, FOLLOW THE SIGNS.
“Visions of tousled red curls and indignant sniffs caused a small smirk to curl his mouth” IT KILLS ME THAT HE LIKED HER HAIR WAY BACK WHEN. He goes from antagonizing her while thinking about her hair privately to just straight-up playing with it when she charms him! I! Love! Them!
Thank you for writing the most excellent Scorpius/Rose. I am so pleased with all this wonderful content you’re providing me. :D
Love,
Eva
