This story feels very personal, but also universal in the experience of probably most teens, so it's neat that you were able to write about such a specific thing and make it feel more broad than that. It's so important to have a safe place, and a place where you can truly be yourself without fear of judgement, and you show that in here. I also like that the visual details you chose to focus on - the pink walls and soft bedding - are images of comfort, it kind of paints the picture of the room being like a hug, in a way? :P Maybe that doesn't make sense, but anyway what I mean is that the visual detaisl really complement the theme of comfort. Well done on this!

Welp, strong relate.

I don’t know how literally this story is about you, but the emotion shines through as personal. And I think that’s a fairly common thing for a lot of people your age, which apparently some people grow out of? I’ve been thinking about how I still look and act like a teenager in quite a few ways, and while some of them are things I’d like to change, my room being my own and my haven (and honestly looking a lot like a teenager’s room) is not one of them. I think you’ve captured that feeling well here, and I like how you mix broad emotional feelings with specific details of the room.

Nicely done!

Sam.

Yesssss I agree. I feel super, super strongly that having a space of one's own is super, super important for all the reasons you gave. They're all so minor in so many ways, but they combine to make a huge difference to a person's mental health. +1000.

Also, total sidenote, but "Haven" is the name of a fort in a YA fantasy series I absolutely adore, and when I play Civ IV I often name my capital city Haven. So +1000 for the name, too. :P

Author's Response:

<3 You're awesome Branwen!

For me, my bedroom is the only space where I can be myself, so this one is extremely personal for me. All of the reasons combine to make one giant, indestructible argument.

That's an interesting tidbit about the fort and your city game name :)
