Reviews For Charlie Weasley: Dragon Whisperer

I love Charlie thinking of Ron in this moment. I suppose Charlie would try and grill Ron for details about what it was like to fly a dragon if he never got the experience. I think you describe his experience in a way that further shows his love of dragons.

I like how Charlie is involved in the discussion of where the Dragon Riders ought to settle and they trust him enough to hear his opinions. And they trust him enough to teach him more about their unique species of dragons. I love the little joke about "Toothless' wife." I haven't kept up with the series to know about the Light Fury, but I think it's cute his mate is the "opposite," of him. :)

And Charlie's shock and astonishment at the end was palpable! I hope you decide to continue with this story because I find it really engaging and it's just a super sweet story!

I liked Hiccup’s quip about this being “New Bern,” as a way of explaining the rough looking civilization. And also, the moment when Charlie gave him the monogrammed hankie...I got emotional about it <3

Aww dragon babies curling up in Charlie Weasley’s hand I am all *hearts in eyes* for that kind of imagery. You really make everything inside the lodge feel so cozy, Juls. I really appreciate your attention to detail here. And it seems like Charlie will learn all about these new species thanks to Hiccup. I am curious though if he will report back and what will happen if he does.

I love that he is going to get to ride a dragon! You can tell he’s super excited about that and it’s totally adorable. Such a cute chapter, Juls!

Can I just say that Charlie Weasley as the “go to,” dragon expert in HP meeting Hiccup, this scrappy adorable dragon rider guy is going to be my favorite sort of meeting? It’s like theory meets practical experience? Well, ok, Charlie has hands-on experience with dragons too, but you present him as highly academic in this as well from the start.

Also that little detail about Kinglsey retiring and Hermione “wanting to be ready,” just seems like a very Hermione sort of thing. I loved that small detail.

Also, poor Charlie, dealing with a significant loss of a friend :( Hopefully, he can view this trip as a welcome escape that also involves something he loves dearly.

I’m looking forward to the next chapter!

Oh my gosh Juls, this is such a cute read! HP meets HTTYD...gahh I love that Charlie meets Hiccup in this chapter through the dragon, a creature both of them LOVE. Charlie’s initial assessment of the dragon further shows us just how much of a subject matter expert he is when it comes to dragons. I loved the line about “it wasn’t as aggressive as some species otherwise he would have ended  up in its belly,” a nice injection of humor there. :)

Also “a crispy Weasley fry,” omgawsh how hilarious is that!

I love how you write Hiccup’s voice in this. I can totally hear him like I’m watching the film. I love the differences between the two worlds that you explain to each of the characters. Obviously for fans of both, we are familiar with those universes, but these characters are not. So it was great to see them learning about one another.

I really want to continue this because it’s such a fascinating combination of worlds and characters.

Hi, juls.

Well, I'm glad that the Berkians are treating Charlie politely so far, but he still hasn't given them a  detailed explanation of why he came to this region or what he plans to do with any new information that he gains about their dragons.  I'm sure they will insist sooner or later.  But the inhabitants of the simple settlement where the Berkians live have welcomed him and have given him a meal, and that's a start.

And Hiccup and his mother Valka have given Charlie a brief sketch of the Berkian history, several centuries, it seems in a few sentences, but I'm not sure that any of it involves Charlie.  He has problems of his own now  Has he gone through a time barrier to end up at Hiccup's village of New Berk?  Can   I have a feeling he'snot going to get home any time soon.Charlie get back through the barrier?  And how will he get back home with a broken broom?

An interesting story, and you write it well.

Hi, juls.

I haven't read many Charlie Weasley stories, but I expect that he's an interesting guy, different from his brothers.

This will be an interesting story, set in the far north with these people in a culture unfamiliar to Charlie, and with small, tame dragons that they ride on.  You have set up some sources of tension already -- Charlie has lost his broom, and the people are suspicious of him because he wears a dragon-skin coat and wants to learn more about their dragons, which may bring unwanted interference with their society and way of life.

He may be faced with an ethical dilemma also, if he must choose between fulfilling his research obligations and protecting these people's way of life.

I will be interested to see what you do with these characters.  Hiccup appears to Charlie to be a young man, yet he introduces himself as the Chieftain of Berk.  How did he get that title at such a young age?  And  why is he missing a leg?  These people don't seem to have magic, yet they are not surprised to hear Charlie say that he does.

A good start, putting Charlie in this position.  Looks like a good story in the making!

Oh cool!! I was wondering how Charlie would take to the villagers, but it seems to have gone really smoothly.

I loved that he was immediately adopted by a little baby dragon. It was so cute that he crawled into Charlie's hands and went to sleep. I think I'd never put him down, to be honest. :D

And I liked how you wrote Valka and Charlie's meeting. I think it makes a lot of sense for her to be suspicious of him. He's an outsider from a place they've never heard of. And he's talking about all sorts of nonsense (well, to the Berkians it would be nonsense). So I liked that she questioned his motives.

But he still gets invited on a dragon ride!! That's probably going to be the highlight of his life, let's be honest. :D

I do wonder how Berk/New Berk has been so isolated from the greater society/world. I guess it makes sense insofar as they don't do much traveling anymore. But you'd think they would still have seen an airplane or something and had to figure out what was going on. Maybe that will be explained later in the story.

So far, so good! Reading on soon!

What a great intoduction between Charlie and the HTTYD cast!! I'm so happy to see Toothless this early on in the story! He's one of my absolute favorite creatures in any movie/book/etc. (because he's a big kitty!!), so I was really excited to see how he'd take to Charlie.

Hiccup and Astrid are fabulous. You did a great job introducing them and writing their dialogue. They're definitely recognizable from canon but also unique to this story, which I really like.

One thing I'm not too sure about is the point-of-view that this story is narrated from. I think it might be third-person omniscient (since we know what Astrid is thinking, what Charlie is thinking, etc.), but sometimes it also seems like third-person limited. Either way, I was a little thrown off by sentences like, "She did seem less of a hot head than her fiancé," since there wouldn't be a way for Charlie to know the relationship between Astrid and Hiccup. I guess it was just a bit hard to figure out who knew what, etc., as I read.

Other than that, though, this was a really good chapter! I'll read on soon!

Best,
Emily

Hello again! (I feel like I'm reading a ton of your stories lately, but I'm happy to do it!)

This is such a cool idea for a crossover. I almost never read crossovers, but this one seemed like a natural and interesting progression, so I wanted to check it out. HTTYD is such a wonderful franchise, and I think Charlie is really going to love the dragons he meets in Berk!

I like the setup for this story—Hermione definitely seems like a natural Division Head for the Beast Department, and I think she knows that Charlie will do well on a job like this. I like that she didn't ask him to interact with the new dragon (Is it Toothless?? I hope it's Toothless. :D :D :D  ) since I'm sure she knows that could be really dangerous. But she also trusts him not to do anything that would endanger a new species.

Great prologue! I'm excited to delve into this story.

Best,
Emily

Hey Juls!

I’m finally getting around to this again after you mentioned you had updated it in our prefect chat :P

Timeline, shmimeline, who needs it! I love that you’ve decided to kind of weave in all three of the HTTYD movies though as backstory to when Charlie comes in. AND you bring in the excellent point of them being so far behind technologically that Charlie probably did have to do some sort of time travel or parallel universe traveling to even get to New Berk. Hiccup is too trusting, sometimes, but I’m glad Valka is still staunch and averse to new people when it’s important, such as with a stranger falling from the sky as Charlie did. His wonderment at how the little baby dragons behave & how closely the people of New Berk live and work with their dragons is spot on -- you’ve really nailed his character down! I look forward to seeing if Charlie helps them find a safe place for their dragons to thrive, and if/how he can return to his time elsewhere in Bulgaria/London! Great chapter :)

Hi, juls.

Thank you for information about your updating story. I really enjoyed this chapter. The memory we watched the movie, Hiccup, Toothless and the other characters with their dragons came back. The descriptions around Toothless is perfect. I remember you have a pet. Toothless's movement is just like cats. They are cute. I smiled at Charlie's favorite baby dragon as well. You depicted her nicely. I love it.

The episode how Hiccup lost his father made me sad. The scene before and after was so thrilling, and your reviving power is fantastic.

I am happy to know you restarted writing this crossover. :)

Thank you, Kenny. I'm so glad you're liking this story. I meant to update earlier, just got myself caught up on writing the scene walking to the village. I changed how the chapter began, and bam, it worked.

Hi again, Juls! :)

Oh no, I hope Charlie is okay! Clearly he had a nasty crash if his broom is broken into bits and he’s got (probably) a mild concussion from the impact with whatever he crashed into. It’s TOOTHLESS, OMG! Toothless being, well, toothless, as Charlie’s first impression of the dragon, I love it so much, oh my god. Ooh, magic is something these folks aren’t going to know about, ooh I wonder how that conversation is going to go... But hey it’s Hiccup and Astrid now, oh boy, and this is where stuff gets awkward because they’re technically muggles, right? Or are they, since dragons exist in their world? I’d love to know about how you decided whether or not Charlie would be breaking the Statute of Secrecy by telling Hiccup and Astrid that he’s a wizard etc etc because clearly that is a point I am fixating on just now. ANYHOW, I love the casualness that Hiccup and Astrid display with Toothless and Starfly that causes Charlie to absolutely GAPE at them -- it’s the right touch of hilarity with truth and good characterization. The two of them talking about dragons like family and then Charlie being there like, sorry, the last few dragons have literally tried to fry me alive, that does not compute, please try again later. I’m curious to see what any future chapters would hold, and what the village of Berk would think of Charlie, and what he’d think of literally all of the dragons there and how many different new breeds there are! I hope you finish this piece, I’m really looking forward to more :)

Hey Juls! :)

I realized I never read the other entrants for Kenny’s Dragon Tale challenge, so I thought I’d check this out now. First of all, I love this crossover idea! It’s so perfect and ideal for Charlie, and gives him some much needed love from this fandom! You justify Hermione’s position as Department Head for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures division within the Ministry, and I think that’s a unique take on her career trajectory -- most often people write her as having gone through MLE or something similar to that, so this is a refreshing reimagining of that! I’m very curious as to what breed of dragon it is that has been sighted! Is it Toothless and his female white counterpart? Is it another of the more common species of dragon from HTTYD? So many questions that I hope you’ll be answering later! Having Charlie be on “Compassionate Leave” is a neat idea -- it’s different than leave from your romantic partner passing and needing to grieve, but still gives these trainers leave when they need it when a close work companion passes. Very nice and thoughtful idea! I’m curious about the sorts of tests the Healers would do to determine if someone would be ready to return to work after their Compassionate Leave time was over, or if it’s more of a questionnaire situation. Overall, I am excited to see what Charlie finds in Scandinavia on his totally-not-a-work-trip-vacation, and who all he might meet on his travels there! Onto the next chapter I go :)

Wow, juls. I didn't expect this development. You did really great. I remembered you would write crossover. Honestly, you combined two famdoms so nicely! I could imagine how Hiccup talked to Charlie. We don't know Charlie in the film well, because the production or J.K.Rowling didn't describe him much. On the contrary, you let Charlie be impressive for the readers. First, you set his sad episode in the previous chapter,  having sympathy towards him and we readers continue reading this chapter. It really worked well!

I smiled at the scene how Toothless and Astrid entered. I could imagine as if I saw the film. You succeeded in writing active, smart Astrid and funny, adorable Toothless. Hiccup is too protective checking whether Toothless wasn't harmed at all. It's understandable knowing the fandom.

I am impressed by the scene where Toothless sniffed the dragon-skin robes. I felt for Toothless, I understand how disgusted to notice his own kind skin Charlie put on even if he used the dead old dragon's skin.

Charlie is still negative towards coming back to his job, however, it's obvious he had interest in the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless and he must be mesmerized by how magnificently Hiccup could ride Toothless. I found you didn't complete this. I expect a new chapter from now!

Hi, Juls! Thank you for your entry @Dragon Tale story challenge.

I really like how you began this story. Apparently Charlie, he got injured in the middle of caring the dangerous creature, dragon, oh, he seemed to have lost his colleague. It might be his first time to lose his fellow? I feel for him.

I like how you let Hermione enter. And the description of her mind movement is marvelous! I really like how she remembered Charlie's brave action in the Battle of Hogwarts. And you mentioned she had a soft spot for Charlie because of his younger brother, Ron. I like how you connect the ship into this.

Scandinavia! It sounds fantastic! I imagine the beautiful scenery of the north land. I'll come back to the next chapter soon.

I’M SO EXCITED WE GOT TO MEET THE HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON KIDS SO EARLY ON IN THE STORY. Except they are most definitely not kids anymore, especially in this story hahaha, with Hiccup having grown a whole beard and all. I really like how we went from “What could go wrong?” at the end of last chapter to Charlie waking up from having been knocked unconscious hahaha. But what exactly knocked him out? Was it Toothless, who was just trying to play with him? Or something a little more sinister? It seemed like Charlie took a pretty hard hit, which makes me wonder if the attack was like intentional.

TOOTHLESS IS LIKE THE CUTEST LITTLE BABY EVER I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. He’s honestly the cutest dragon, so much like a cat. I also realize he’s like over twenty years old in this story, but he’s still cute. :P I love how you wrote Toothless’s relationship with Hiccup, how they’re so close and playful with each other now aww. Every little shock that Charlie had about the extent of the dragon riders’ relationships with their respective dragons was also very funny hahaha. I’m actually a little more surprised that Hiccup wasn’t completely shocked by Charlie’s wand and broomstick—those are both entirely foreign objects to the Vikings, and so I thought he’d be a little more wary of them.

A couple of quick comments—I’m pretty sure that Hiccup has brown hair (instead of red). Also, I was surprised when Astrid was described as having a cooler head than Hiccup, because she had such a temper and very snarky humor. But that’s it! I really enjoyed this chapter!

I LOVE THE IDEA OF HERMIONE GRANGER AS HEAD OF BEAST CONTROL. That’s a position I’ve never imagined her in, yet I feel like she can do anything she’d put her mind to, so if this is part of her plan in reaching Minister of Magic, I support her wholeheartedly. (I suppose she’s Hermione Weasley now, isn’t she? Or Hermione Granger-Weasley? Unless she decided to forgo tradition and keep her maiden name, which would be cool!)

Anyway! I was so excited to read this story because it’s a crossover between Harry Potter and How to Train Your Dragon, and who doesn’t love crossovers?? Of course Charlie is the main character of this story, as he’s really the only one in the Harry Potter novels who has experience with dragons, so it would be beyond amazing for him to meet all the kids up at Berk. If that’s what happens. (I realize that the How to Train Your Dragon crew are not kids anymore, however, to keep myself from feeling too sad that they’re all grown up, I will continue calling them kids.)

It’s really kind of amusing that Charlie is technically on leave to recover from his friend’s death, but now he thinks that his recovery period is taking too long and therefore he just kinda wants to leap straight into work. I can kinda understand him wanting to avoid further motherly worry from Molly haha, sometimes mothers worry a little too much when, really, their children are fine. Though I am a little curious about what exactly Hermione means by “just a little looksy into just what may have been sighted” haha, because won’t that put Charlie in high risk of having to be like actively involved in the dragon-wrangling process? Especially if the dragon is particularly keen on attacking him? Unless Hermione already knows this and is just letting him go anyway. :P

It’s really cool that he’ll be flying his broom in the process!!! I’m really excited to see what dragon he meets (will it be Toothless???) and who he meets at Berk!

Ahahah! I bet tamed dragons aren't something Charlie is used to... :P

And I can't exactly blame Hiccup for being suspicious, especially after all the ill-intentioned people he's met in his life... and Charlie isn't exactly well-intentioned? I mean, he's not bad intentioned either, he just has a different point of view and different experiences... I hope they'll find some common ground, eventually, and that wizards won't try to interfere with Berk's traditions. Although, I expect a lot of drama happening, before any actual level of understanding and trust will be established.

Poor Charlie, though... being attacked by Toothless like that must not have been fun... at least he still has his wand... also, I would have never imagined Hiccup being the hotheaded one between him and Astrid... that's funny! :P But I supposed he would get quite aggressive when it came to protect his dragon... and his village... I wonder how things will move on from there...

This is a really fun story so far. Such a cool idea! I'll try to be back once you'll have more! ;)

Thank you so much for the swap!

Hi, Juls, my dear! Here for our swap! :)

I've never seen a HP/HTTYD crossover before (I don't normally read many crossovers in general) but I'm intrigued! I can't wait for Charlie to meet the Berkians, I bet he'll have quite the shock! :P

This prologue was short but very interesting. The idea of Hermione being Charlie's boss is so funny, but I guess it does make sense that she would get ahead in the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, considering her interest in house-elves'rights etc. I also love that she's actually aiming to become Minister... that's an ambitious side of Hermione that I didn't know, but I like it. I think it might actually be fitting! :P

Poor Charlie... did his friend die on the job? Anyway, that's sad... but obviously he's the type of person who needs to do something, right? ;)

I'll move to the next chapter now and see what awaits him on this adventure! :D

Snowball hug, my dear!

hey juls, i'm here for EvS, team emerald!

i thought this was a really interesting take on both charlie and hermione - i can definitely imagine charlie from the books thinking he's ready to come back to work even though the healers might not think so (we don't see all that much of him but i'm going from what we know...i mean the guy smuggled a baby dragon out of the country because his little eleven year old brother asked him to!) but i would've expected him to jump at the chance to go to scandinavia and investigate this possibly new dragon breed! but i think that initial reluctance shows that maybe he's not as okay as he thinks he is with the death of his friend :/

with hermione, i have a bit of trouble imagining her wanting to force (force might be a strong word) charlie to go, but i sort of think it's her way of trying to help him by giving him an exciting new task and distracting him from grief. which is definitely a nice thing.

i love the fact that you're writing a crossover HP fic with HTTYD and i'm excited to see how it develops and what aspects of HTTYD you're going to incorporate with the wizarding world. the dragon breeds probably?

i also think that even though you start this off with a death of a friend, charlie seems like he's trying to deal with things with work and a bit of humour, which is definitely something i can understand - i just hope he's not overestimating his capabilities...but then again, it's going to be fun seeing what trouble he lands himself into in scandinavia :P
