Reviews For What If...

I really love Snape, I don't care what people say about him being awful. He did some awful things, certainly, but he's a fascinating, multifaceted character and has a moral compass even if it hasn't always worked right.

I really enjoyed this "what if" situation and his mortification over having his memories and secrets spilled in front of everyone. I 100% see him as a person who wishes he had just been allowed to die. I really like that Kingsley is the one who stepped forward to represent him!

I do wish, in light of the significance and somewhat shocking nature of these memories being revealed, that we as the reader might have been able to see some reactions of the spectators at the trial  - and Snape's dealing with people's reactions. But I also understand that 1) this fic is more focused on him and 2) perhaps they would be either too stunned or too considerate to make a thing out of it to his face.

I liked your take on his relationship with Dumbledore, and that it was a friendship. It was certainly a trying relationship in canon, and they had a great deal of respect for one another. And Dumbledore is the only person who knew who and what Severus really was.

Hey juls!

I'm here for your long awaited challenge review! I'm sorry it took me so long especially considering how good this was!

I thought the concept was so interesting that Snape is alive! I thought it was very believeable about how he survived as I really liked that. The description of his injuries really added to your plot line. I know that Snape would struggle with depending on others and not be able to do what he wanted. You have him wanting to die which is very powerful.

I love the idea about how he is facing trial for his crimes. We don't really see much of the justice process but I thought it was a great thing to explore with Snape. I thought you did a wonderful job at Snape's characterisation, you've done lovely job at getting Snape's biting sense of humour even in this dire situation. He always has such an interesting character, he is complex person. I thought that you balanced him perfectly for a realistic 'what if' situation.

I like Kingsley as the 'lawyer' and that his memories that were collected in canon was used in this scenerio. JKR has always said that she thought that Harry would show the wizarding world what Snape had done for the wizarding world and I really liked your versions of events. well done!

hey juls! i'm here for our review swap :D

i really liked this 'what if' scenario - snape living through the war is always such an interesting idea to explore and i think you're pretty spot on with snape not expecting to live through the war and to have to face the consequences. especially having the whole world to see all of his secrets.

his annoyance at the whole ordeal had me giggling while reading the story, it's probably very in accordance with canon snape (i always loved his snarky responses!). but at least he allowed kingsley to save him and it must've been hard for him :o

i also liked him thinking of dumbledore as a friend even despite everything dumbledore put him through (chiefly, having to kill him instead of draco) - i imagine he's still feeling a lot of guilt over everything and it must be hard to remember dumbledore. having him think he saw a phoenix in the fire was a very nice touch!

Hi Juls. I’m here for your What If Challenge review.

First, Severus Snape, is as you probably know, my favorite JKR character and his death (along with Remus’s) is something I’m still trying to forgive JKR for writing. I think you are absolutely right that Snape didn’t expect to live through the war. The question is not so much whether he expected it but rather did he hope to live to the end. Again, I think you were correct when you described his “hopes dashed into disappointment” when he faced the fact that he wasn’t actually going to die. I suspect you are right that he would have been very annoyed if he had actually survived.

I found it interesting that they bound him to the bed while at St. Mungo’s, not just tethered, but securely bound so he couldn’t even wiggle. Were they afraid he might actually be strong enough to escape or were the auror’s just enacting their petty revenge? I love that fact that he smiled during Umbridge’s trial. Wouldn’t we all!

Kingsley is a brave man to be Snape’s defense lawyer, not only because of the overwhelming evidence against his client, but also his client’s lack of motivation to prove his own innocence. I’m surprised that Snape agreed to having counsel so quickly and his reasons “to humor an old colleague” extremely questionable and not very Snape-like. I never thought of Severus Snape as adapting his decisions to humor anyone, except maybe Dumbledore and Lily.

I love how you had him mentally cross his arms. Even when frozen in place, Snape has the ability to show his displeasure and his typical attitude of indifference to others and the assumption that other had as little ability as he did to show empathy to others.

Yet, maybe he secretly did want to survive. Maybe deep down the desire to start over outweighed the horror of exposure of his deepest secrets. Afterall, when Kingsley announced and help up the vial, he could have objected. He could have fired his newly hired counsel but he remained silent.

Would he, eventually be happy that his life didn’t end by the bite of a snake or a kiss of a dementor? You gave us a small glimpse that it is a possibility. I really liked the Phoenix rebirth in the flames idea. Perhaps it is a symbol of Snape’s future and all the things that are now possible.

Thank you for entering in the challenge. I’ll have the results up soon.

Hello, Juls, my dear! Here for our swap! Sorry for the latenes...

I will confess, I'm not Severus' biggest fan. But I still would've never wanted him to be condemned if he survived Nagini's attack. And I would've never forgiven Harry if he didn't do everything in his power to make sure that Severus' true allegiances were known.

And of course that's exactly what you have here. The poor judge, who had thought this was going to be quick... :P I wonder what everyone thought when the Minister in person stepped in to testify in Severus' defence... :D

I love how you've built the whole scene. As always, your narration is so good. And your characterization of Snape was spot on as well. Of course he would hate the idea of his memories shown in front of the whole courtroom, even if those memories are going to clear his name... of course he would wish that they'd let him die instead... *rolls eyes*

What exactly was Umbridge's sentence? I'm curious to know :P (if there is one character that I 100% detest, that's Dolores Umbridge)

One thing that surprised me a little was that they actually sentenced people to the Dementor Kiss... I would've thought that after the Dementors betrayed the Ministry and started working for Voldemort, the Ministry would get rid of them after the war? Also, I would've hoped that the new government would care a bit more about human rights? But I guess so soon in the aftermath of the war human rights wouldn't be the first priority... I'm still sad...

I was surprised by the last scene, and how Severus feels still so close and loyal to Dumbledore, but I guess theirs was a complex relationship and much deeper than what could appear from the outside (I actually have the same idea myself). I also think that it would've been amusing if Severus went back to teach... I know that's the last thing he wants, but it would've been hilarious. :P

This was an interesting, little piece. I really enjoyed reading it. :)

Thank you so much for swapping, dear! <3

Love,

Chiara

I'm back for the April EvS! O/ heeey!

I enjoyed the way you portrayed this particular What If scenario, with Hermione saving Snape from Nagini's attack. What I love more is the focus of the scenario, as Snape now has to face judgment against his crimes in the war. I love that he thinks his fate was sealed -- to the eyes of everyone around him, he murdered Albus Dumbledore and was certain to face Azkaban or worse. Because of this, it largely makes sense why he would have preferred death and is regretting the fact that Hermione saved him.

I think my favorite parts are the fact that Shacklebolt has offered to defend him, serving up the evidence that is needed to free Snape of his charges. However, and quite understandably, said evidence is particularly mortifying for him. As such a private and guarded man, I can see how those memories that he gave Harry were something for Harry alone and ONLY because Snape was facing his certain and irrevokable morality (had he known that Hermione was going to save him, I'm sure he would've thought twice before giving up something so personal). I thought you did an amazing job in displaying his absolute mortification at having those memories shown before the entire courtroom.

You already know but I think it's worth saying again -- I loved the ending. The toast to Dumbledore and the Pheonix appearing in the fireplace left some lovely symbolism at the end, as well as some fantastic imagery!

Lovely job!

Juls,

I do love a good snape story, especially when it keeps him alive.

I like the way you describe how he feels in st mungos.  How it’s almost  like he’s a prisoner the way he’s bound to the bed despite the pain he’s in and being a patient

I like the bit about him wanting to clap at Delores Umbridge’s downfall that was brilliant!

It’s so very like snape to not want to accept help when offered, he feels so much guilt over that which Albus asked of him.  He is so honourable *squeeeee*

It’s not surprising that Severus is less than impressed with his memories being brought to court.  I think a part of him wanted to die, punishment for the heinous things he had to do and finally peace after a life without the only woman he ever loved.

Oh my snakey heart ❤️ I do love this man!

Great writing!!
