Reviews For Owl Never Do That Again

Given my username I HAD to read this and it was SO funny. Ridiculous as it was, I can definitely see this happening to the next gen group. Nice touch adding that phrase in french. I can see Fleur saying that in defence of her daughter.

Thanks for a silly story!

Merry Christmas!

Taylor, I’m here for the CMDC, round #2

I love the idea of how the letters were mixed up. Never made the connection that Freddy and Teddy rhyme and I’m sure Victoire had loopy handwriting. Her Veela background, French name just screams loopy handwriting.

Of course that bird has an attitude, because Freddy, obviously, has an attitude about birds. Perhaps the bird heard him ranting after reading the Daily Prophet article (or perhaps he just really likes toast.) Still the “banter” between the two characters was well done.

You also did a nice job crafting a letter whose parts could be used for the conversation later. The letter to conversation meshed well. In my opinion, Victoire was much too nice to Freddy. She does manage to take it in stride. Perhaps she has a better sense of humor than her mother ever did. Still, I wonder how long they’ll be able to keep this a secret (and who gets to tell Fleur?)

The ending was hilarious. Great ending although I’m not sure if Freddy’s idea of normal is really that normal.

Author's Response:

hi barbara!

the wrong owl challenge was such a fun prompt, and it somehow prompted me to be like 'oh, freddy and teddy rhyme, that could lead to chaos' and thus... this fic was born. :P

the bird definitely sensed freddy's distaste for him :P

ah yeah, vic definitely has a good sense of humour about it all. she *was* the one who messed up the letter, anyways.

thanks for reading!

Hey Taylor! I’m here with one of your (extremely belated) prize reviews from my Broadway Musical Song Challenge! :)

First of all, one of your non-Jily fics, but it’s a Teddy/Victoire so I know that I’m already going to love it based on the pairing and puns in the title & story summary alone! :P Taylor, this fic was the most hilarious thing I’ve read in months!! I’ve never really read a Fred II-centered fic, but this did not disappoint one bit! The combination of the wrong owl and the millennials killing all of the industries is just perfect and speaks to both your and my annoyance over those kinds of articles. His immediate prankster plan of holding the letter of Victoire’s head at the big Weasley-Delacour-Potter gathering and Teddy going along with it? Absolutely priceless! I should have known better by now that you have top notch comedy skills, but the level to which you have Freddy take it until Victoire finally gets it at dinner and then her realizing Teddy was totally okay with Freddy doing it, I just, it’s so FUNNY! Pulling in the cell phones and how “kids these days” just sext instead of sending letters was a nice choice and works extremely well with this generation of the HP characters. Your end note was just icing on the cake that made me laugh even more, so kudos to you on such a great fic! :)

~Madi

Author's Response:

hi madi!

i love teddy/vic - they definitely take a backseat to jily, but i adore them nonetheless. fred was an absolutely hilarious character to focus on this bit, and tying in all the millennial jokes was just so perfect/hilarious. i'm so glad you enjoyed this fic and it made you laugh! <3

Hi there, Taylor! I’m here from your forum request, and I’m excited to read your story, as I’ve heard a lot of great things about it.

Oh my goodness, this story was hilarious! I was reading it on my phone, laughing out loud, and hiding it from my kids since they’re too young for it. :-)

I loved the whole set up—with the article about how the younger generation of wizards is now ruining wizarding kind by not using owls and using cell phones instead. I’m really curious as to who invented the magic-resistant cell phones too. Freddy’s reaction to the article and then his subsequent fight with the owl that arrives was sooo funny. I loved that the owl stole his toast! The next section where he starts reading what is obviously someone else’s letter too—I was in stitches. And, I’m sorry, it serves him right that he then gets waaayyy too much information about his cousin’s love life. Dude, why did you keep reading? Although, to be honest, the letter was beautifully written, so maybe he was just too enraptured by Victoire’s lovely prose.

Of course, he’s going to blame his cousin (although I like that  you point out that he knows it’s his own fault. He’s not a bad guy after all :-) and desire revenge. The fact that Teddy is so quick to join in the revenge plot is funny and perhaps speaks to why Teddy and Victoire broke up in the first place…I hope that she won’t be so mad that she dumps him again.

The dinner at the Weasley house was charming. I like how, even though the next generation is so modern, they still have a strong sense of family and obviously enjoy being together. I love seeing Nana Molly as the matriarch of this brood and that they love her cooking. And Fleur’s reaction to Teddy’s presence is on point. Although, I’m sure that Victoire will bring her around in time.

The whole sequence with Freddy subtly—and then not so subtly—teasing Victoire was also hysterical. I enjoyed how she was confused at first, but then quickly realized what must have happened. And, I have to agree with her, a hand-written letter, especially a love letter, is a thing of beauty and it’s a shame they are so rare these days. Although, with cousins like Freddy, maybe it will be for the best if she refrains from writing letters for a while. Or, at least, uses Teddy’s whole name when she addresses the thing. :-)

The confrontation was funny and sweet. I’m glad that Victoire wasn’t too mad and that they all made up. And the last line was perfectly put.

I really enjoyed this story!! Great work! Thanks for coming by my thread. :-)

Yours,

Noelle

Author's Response:

hi noelle!! ahh yes, please don't show this to your kids. :P

when ineke and paula came up with the millennials ruin everything challenge, the owl idea was the very first thing that came to mind - it's such a hilariously outdated form of communication that i could 100% see younger witches/wizards finding a way to ditch the things as soon as possible. especially when you've got a particularly sassy owl like the one freddy encounters. he also absolutely deserves what he reads - hopefully this teaches him not to snoop through other people's mail anymore, haha.

teddy and vic's breakup was more along the lines of one of those teenage misunderstandings, and teddy's joining in on the prank is more indicative of their current relationship and the way that they have a solid foundation to it now - he knows she won't get too mad about it, at the very least.

i adore writing the next gen clan in large family situations - i envision them all being pretty close, and those dynamics in a group setting are always really fun to write. and freddy works the teasing in through lines that are just casual enough that no one else will pick up on them, and that's almost the funniest part for him - vic's slowly cracking but no one else knows anything is even remotely wrong. but yes, victoire will definitely be more cautious with her addressing in the future.

i'm so glad you enjoyed this (and tysm for nominating it for a POG) - thanks for reading!! <3

Hey, Taylor! :)

I'm here for our swap!

I had no idea what to pick (you have so many interesting things on your AP) but then I thought that this looked hilarious, and it was also nommed for SotM, I think? So I had to stop by here! :P

And, oh, Merlin! I loved this! So very much! You are so good at writing humour, you know? And the whole idea behind this was wonderful! :D

First of all, I have to agree with the kids there. What the hell is wrong with wizards insisting to live as if they still were in Medieval times? I get the appeal of an handwritten letter, but owls? Siriusly? Thank Merlin for the new generations starting to live in the modern world! :P

The letter was pure gold! Poor Freddy, I can imagine how shocked he would be... now I'm wondering why Teddy and Victoire broke up in the first place... totally irrelevant, yes, I know, but still I'm curious... :P

Anyway, I loved all the details you put in the letter! And even more I loved the way Fred used the quotes through the dinner... so smart! The way she greeted her, with the bicycles' thing... and then the I just want to yell to everyone how in love with this roast I am bit... ahahah! I can't really choose a favourite bit because, really, all of it was so great!

Side note... James is Head Boy?! I will admit that I haven't read enough of your Complicated/Complex universe (a thing that I should probably fix sometime...) to have a clear idea of your take of him, but I'm so used to think of him as his granddad's mischievous doppelganger that imagining him as Head Boy is a bit shocking... (then, again, I think James I was canonically Head Boy(?), which is crazy, so...)

I'm sure I should say so much more... but the point is, I've loved every second of this! You had me laugh out loud and, really, the whole piece has been delightful and such a crazy rollercoaster! You are wonderful, you know it, don't you?

Thank you so much for swapping!

Lots of love,

Chiara

Author's Response:

hi chiara!

writing humor is so much fun for me, and it really just fell into place with the two challenges i was working with. because yes, owls as letter delivery is *such* a dated form of communication, and there are a million better and more efficient ways to communicate. and of course, the letter itself definitely comes with a bit of a shock for poor freddy - as for their breakup, i never really fleshed that one out in my head, but i imagine it was probably some sort of thing where there was just a lot of miscommunication and people took sides on the argument. but freddy does a great job plugging it into conversation in a way that's just obvious enough that vic can tell something's wrong, but it takes her a little bit.

this fic actually doesn't exist in the same universe as complicated/complex - a lot of my next gen fics don't - and james is most definitely not head boy material in that universe. (but yes, james i was head boy, haha.)

anyways, i'm so happy you enjoyed this, and you're absolutely wonderful too. <3

hey taylor! i'm here with your challenge review :D

i really enjoyed reading this story - it was very funny and made me laugh out loud a couple of times ^_^ the idea if magic-resistant cell phones sounds cool, and even though i'm....basically in love with owls (really! they're flying cats and nobody can convince me otherwise :P ) i still think cell phones and some other sorts of technology would make its way into wizarding society. the fact that there are still people who refuse to use them remind me of hipsters who love all things retro and vic being one made me smile :P

freddy is a fun character but omg teddy is actually a bit mean in this? if i got it right, he did something to break vic's heart and now he's ready to prank her with freddy? but i get his frustration with her refusal to text and in the end she wasn't all that angry *_*

kris

Author's Response:

hi kris! haha yes, the goal of this story was definitely a few laugh out loud moments, so i'm delighted that i've achieved that. and i love owls (although i've never thought of them as flying cats, but that's perfect), but it was also funny to think about how cell phones are way more convenient and would eventually "ruin" the owl industry in the same way that email/text has "ruined" the postal service. but yes, there are always those few people who enjoy being old-fashioned, and vic is no exception.

lol teddy is... well, i wouldn't call him mean, but he's definitely here for a laugh. their breakup was actually probably some misunderstanding where both parties were wrong, but as is often the case, people tend to take the side of the person they're closer to and kind of assume the other person was in the wrong, as was the case with fleur and her french comments. he's actually a pretty nice guy, all things considered, and he *knows* victoire won't be actually angry, so he immediately hops on board with freddy's plan, haha.

thanks for the review, and for hosting this wonderful challenge! i had a lot of fun with it! :)

Hi Taylor!

I need to be completely honest and say that this story absolutely made my day! It's funny, it's fluffy, it's cute, it's wonderful, and I loved it! 10/10 on the casting of Freddy on your banner too ;)

I've read mentions of muggle tech in other fics before but nothing that really captured my interest (most were just heavily convenient for plot and not actually explained), but the whole first part with Freddy commenting on the uselessness of owl post now compared to muggle communication methods got me thinking a lot! I love the idea of magic-resistant muggle tech (Muggleborns would GO WILD), and Freddy's general annoyance at owls is entertaining.

WHAT A SASSY OWL, I LOVE IT. The way it just eyes him like "gimme treats or imma come at you, bro!" and then just takes all the toast!!

Lysander is hilarious, I love him. Victoire's letter was adorable and then I was like WOAH TML OH THE SMUT! *wheezes*

Freddy is absolutely a Weasley with blackmailing Teddy and getting to poke fun at Vic.

Favourite line:

“"I would’ve endorsed that idea even if you weren’t holding confidential information over me like blackmail.”
Freddy’s smirk turns into a full-blown grin. “Fucking brilliant.”"

I absolutely howled!! Teddy has been hanging with the Weasley-Potter clan too much hahahahaha - and we mustn't forget he is also the son of Tonks and one of the Marauders.

Loved the discussion with the Weasley cousins about letters vs owl post. All the relatable Millennial wizarding references had me dying!

Freddy baiting Vic was the funniest, the way he just kept casually dropping in quotes from the letter into the conversation. The pain au chocolat one had me snorting into my soda XD

Honestly, Taylor, I LOVED THIS!! Thank you for introducing me to it xox

Author's Response:

hi! ahh, i'm so glad you liked this so much!! truthfully, i very rarely include muggle tech in my stories, but writing a story in which millennials ruin the owl industry definitely called for it - there are so many reasons that cell phones are infinitely more convenient than letting a bird handle all of your correspondence. i had fun exploring that one. and this particular owl is a sassy little asshole, which makes it even better.

ahahaha surprise smut!!! i'm glad you were just as shocked as poor freddy.

and yes, teddy has spent too much time with the potter-weasley clan and has definitely adopted their tendencies, but of course, fred is the true OG here and is the one who successfully baits vic and just generally creates pure chaos for his own enjoyment.

thank you for reviewing, and i'm so so happy you liked it so much!!
