Hello again!
Wow! This was such a great space opera! I'm so impressed with all of the ones that Ravenclaw wrote for the Collab!
I love how you worked all of the sci-fi elements into this story in ways that seemed natural and intuitive. I wasn't confused at all by the descriptions or made-up words, and I followed Remus's story easily. The plot was a great way to show that even in this universe, Remus has trouble at school. Which made me sad, but also happy when he found his Marauders.
Your characterization of all of them was really great. I love Sirius and can absolutely see the canon version of him standing up for Remus like this. And James and Peter also came through as really sweet and believable in their traits. And of course our dear Remus! Ah, Remus stories make me sad sometimes...I just wish he'd had an easier life, y'know? But this was a really great way to work his struggles into this world you've made, and I liked that a lot.
Your descriptions of the different alien races were wonderful! They show such creativity, and you cleared embraced writing the space opera theme (which I definitely didn't even try because...it sounded hard, haha). Reading all of the amazing 'Claw submissions with that theme have made appreciate you all even more! You're so talented!
Overall, I really liked this! It was very unique and original and well-written. Great job!
Best,
Emily
Hi Emma! Here for RvG and Magical Menagerie.
So, I have to admit that I've never read a space opera before, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect of this - I really loved it! I had so much fun reading this story. I thought the way that you took the Marauders that we all know and love and placed them in this completely different setting, but your characterisation of each of them is still incredible, despite the fact that they're ALIENS here and in the best school in the galaxy, Pigfarts (love the name, of course). It was just so much fun to read!
Your Remus was just brilliant in this story. I really wanted to reach through the screen and give him a hug - he was so nervous to start at Pigfarts and just wanted to do his best to keep his head down and stay quiet, but he's naturally not going to succeed in doing that when the Marauders are his roommates. I thought the idea of the prejudice of being a Welber running through was clever, too, and the way that it was something he couldn't really hide this time, which makes it even harder to deal with. But - Peter aside - the Marauders aren't intimidated by it at all.
I can definitely see James being the one to automatically take control of the situation, and then of course Sirius wouldn't hesitate to ask for a photo of him touching Remus's hair - anything to prove a point to his brother.
Was that Snape at the end of the story, sneering at Remus and trying to make his life hell? I can definitely picture him doing that, but I loved the fact that Sirius didn't hesitate to defend Remus and that Remus is counted as one of them now. You really captured the fact that Remus being with these boys was the first time that he ever felt like he actually fit in with other people around him with the end of this story, and your characterisation here really was amazing.
Sian :)
Hello Emma here for menagerie nonsense, january rvg, etc etc.
GRYBBINPORTS OMG EMMA THAT IS AMAZING!! I remain amazed byt the level of detail you've put into this space opera. I loved that we got more details about the aliens in this one. Remus is part human but also part alien and you could tell that pretty instantly because humans his age are not that tall. Such a great way to describe him!
It's so cute how nervous Remus is here, to go to Pigfarts and to make friends but naturally the rest of the Marauders WILL NOT LET HIM BE NERVOUS! They are his friends now and they don't care that he's a Welber! Our boy Sirius just needs a good pic to use him to wib a bet. These boys don't care about his planet or disease or anything like that!
I loved the breakfast scene where Sirius was standing up for Remus! They've all had a great start to their friendship and this was a great take on the start of the Marauders friendship in this space universe! Still captured the essence of it in this amazing world. Amazing job!

Yes, Sirius! You show them! Was that kid Snape? Just wondering...
Also wondering how exactly this version of lycanthropy works... so the Welber's race is the only one that can contract it? Or at least with consequences? But they are still a danger because of their violence and even if they can't exactly infect the other races, they can still hurt them? Right?
Well, anyway... poor, little Remus... so nervous and scared and trying to make himself look smaller... my poor child...
Of course he would be terrified by starting at Pigfarts, and of course he would want to keep to himself... but of course James, Sirius and Peter won't let him! Ah, the Marauders' friendship! I love that little detail about James having perfect teeth... you just get that feeling of privilege that he gives out in canon, too. But also, he's immediately so welcoming. Tell whatever you want, but James is absolutely wonderful!
Sirius and Peter were perfect in that scene, too. Of course Sirius would be a little bit rude without wanting it, and asking about silly prejudices his family taught him, and then asking to take the picture so he can tell Regulus off. :P And Peter asking if Remus isn't going to eat them... ah, Pete...
But the best part was the ending, and Sirius standing up for Remus! I love my boys so much, even in alien form! Pigfarts won't be bad at all, Remus, don't worry!
This was so great! You are awesome, dear! Love you so much!

Hi. This is for the Magical Menagerie.
Okay, so maybe if I had read this one before space pirates, I wouldn’t have asked in my other view what they others look like. (In my defense you posted space pirates first in the finished stories list.)
I love the breakfast scene. Okay, I was completely grossed out by the breakfast scene but I still loved the descriptions of each species and what they ate. I can just imagine it as a movie, the camera scanning around the table and finishing with Peter’s long fingers and wiggling grub.
In all seriousness, you did a good job with Remus and this poor Remus is even more obvious than our favorite werewolf because of his size and that you can tell he’s a Welber all the time, not just once a month. The hunching of the shoulders, backing away from conversations. I’m envisioning a very skittish Sully from Monsters Inc.
The language and descriptions are great and alienish. Blarg! Even the slang is so pigfartish!
Ugh Emma this is SO SO SO good. I literally love it so much. Your characterizations of all four Marauders are absolutely SPOT ON even though you've turned them into ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SPECIES. OF ALIENS. Honestly that's really impressive, some people can't even characterize them right as humans! :')
(Also I don't know how it literally just clicked right now that Pigfarts is a reference to AVPM. What is wrong with me)
Oh btw I'm here for the menagerie.
POOR REMUS. You've really mirrored canon so well while also making the specifics of his condition so unique and in-line with the rest of the universe you've created. I said this already but his characterization is spot on. The way that he tries to make himself smaller and be passive/non-confrontational/accommodating is exactly how I imagine him at Hogwarts in canon. It made me sad though :(
And then obviously I LOVED Sirius. He was a little thoughtless right at the beginning but SO SO SWEET at the end, omg. I Love My Alien Son.
There's only one thing I'd note (and I apologize in advance for not noting this in the google doc) which is that it'd be nice if the others (James in particular) joined in on defending Remus or at least praised Sirius's actions or something once he sat back down, just to make it seem more balanced/tie everything together more neatly. But aside from that this was literally PERFECT and I love it so much.
TTFN!

Emma! Here for Gryffindor's January RvG (Go Gold!) and for the Magical Menagerie. And the space opera!!!
Can I just say that my heart has opened even wider for Remus Lupin? He is absolutely adorable in this fic!!! You write his anxiety at being at school extremely well; I can totally see him acting this way in canon, too. I want to wrap him in a giant hug and never let go. Okay, I would let go so he could become better friends with James, Sirius, and Peter.
Speaking of them, they are utterly fascinating aliens!!! I love the way you incorporate their Animagus forms into their other worldly species. James's appetite is absolutely hysterical! Actually, all of their plates of food are wildly appropriate for their kind... what kind of food does Remus eat? I am soooo curious!
Also, come on, Sirius, you know better than to take a picture to prove your brother wrong (okay, this comment is out of order, but I have so many thoughts about this piece!). That scene where they introduce themselves to Remus is so cute! I can feel the protections Remus uses to shield himself from attention and alien interactions melt away as the other boys carry on as if there is nothing too strange or too unusual about Remus.
Furtermore, in this universe, is Pigfarts a magic school? A space academy? If so, what is their focus? Flying ships? I love Grybbinports. What are the other Houses called? I have so many detail-orientated questions. You don't have to answer them, by any means, this is just me showing you how intrigued I am by your incredibly awesome space opera AU! Great job, Emma!!!
Emma! I’ve returned! I know I said after the last review that I was going straight to this one next, but truth be told I completely forgot how to write reviews yesterday (it took me SEVEN hours to write a review…. zoinks) so I was a bit delayed in making it over here.
Anyways, once again, I LOVE all these headcanon alien forms you’ve come up with for the Marauders gang - I love that you’ve incorporated their Animagus forms into it, and how you were able to so seamlessly fit their descriptions into the story. James just casually munching on a wood chip is incredible.
But like, even amongst all the silliness that is their alien forms and the slightly adjusted canon names (idk why I actually giggled out loud at ‘Grybbinport,’ but I did), you’ve still managed to also capture really genuine emotions as well? Like, Remus has just very clearly accepted that his condition means he won’t have any friends and everyone’s going to be afraid of him, so he shuts himself off from the get-go? And is just like, completely surprised that James and Sirius (and sort of Peter, once he stops being scared) are being nice to him? That’s such a good representation of canon and still felt very real in the midst of all the weirdness of the space-opera-part of this.
And I love that Sirius’ first reaction was like ‘I’m gonna touch your hair to beat Regulus in a bet’ because honestly? Spot-on Sirius characterization right there. And then he stands up for Remus in the Great Hall the next morning and it’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship (that’s going to become more than a friendship if I’ve interpreted the title of the next piece correctly, lol).
Anyways, the worldbuilding in this mini-series is fantastic and I continue to be in awe of it. Hopefully it won't take me two days to review the next one now, lol.
