Paula! I'm terrible because I actually read this ages ago, but I haven't reviewed it - but no time like the present, right?
I love Pride and Prejudice, and I love adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, and I loved this story. The college AU idea is so much fun in this context - with a story that we already know so well, but in a very modern setting. It actually kind of reminded me of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, but at the same time you took this and really put your own stamp on it.
I liked the way that you opened this with the tangible awkwardness already there - you've thrown us right into the story and we know the original text well enough to have an idea of what's happened before this point, without you going into the whole history and explaining everything.
Of course, they just happened to be passing on the floor where Lizzie and Jane's dorms happen to be. Yep. Totally believable.
I thought you captured the characterisations really well here - the way that Bingley was so impatient and eager for Jane to arrive, but also bouncing around nervously. Darcy was awkward and didn't quite know where to put himself (I can so easily imagine him leaning against her desk and thinking he looks all casual), and Elizabeth is trying to master the situation and wishing her sister was there. It was so enjoyable and easily recognisable as the characters we know and love.
I really enjoyed the conversation between Darcy and Elizabeth at the end of this chapter, too, hinting at the way their relationship might have been so far. I hope you get a chance to write more Pride and Prejudice AUs soon - maybe even a novel? *hint, hint*
Sian :)
Hi there! I'm here for the winter wonderland. I vaguely remember you talking about this on Twitter, but I didn't know it actually came to fruition.
I am the hugest of fans of Pride and Prejudice, so I am beyond thrilled to have stumbled upon this. While it is AU, I think you did it so well! And you managed to bring these characters into this very relatable, modern environment, but still maintain their essence perfectly.
I really like how you executed this. You didn't just drawl on about past events that are related to what's happening in this scene. Instead, you let us get to know it as the story came together through the way Charles looked at the new pictures on the wall, and then we got to hear a bit about it when Lizzie catches him doing that. And that takes a lot of skill. It's also heartwarming to see that protectiveness that Lizzie has for Jane.
I don't think that there's anything more enjoyable in the world than watching Darcy play Goldilocks, trying to find somewhere suitable for him to sit. There was so much laughing inside my head as I read that bit.
I cannot communicate to you how much I enjoyed every single line of this story. I think you should definitely, definitely go on with it. I'll be your number 1 admirer. Maybe we can see about that impromptu date Lizzie and Darcy are having while pretending they're doing it for Jane and Charlie's sake? Please? I really would be all over that.
Aww! This was so cute. I loved Lizzie and Jane's relationship, so well characterized. I wish there was more awkward Darcy because even the little moments (his ears tinging red, for example) were making me grin like an idiot :D
